ABSTRACT
Purpose: To observe the behavior of the corneal epithelium in patients operated of PRK, and to document the characteristics or epithelial re-grow.
Material and methods: PRK surgery were performed in 23 patients, confocal microscopy (confoscal 3) and panoramic
pictures were taken in the 1, 4, 5, 6 post surgical days, and each week during 3 weeks and each month during 2 months,
and were compared these photographs to study the characteristics of epithelial grow like intercellular space, cellular size and color intensity. We also did a cellular count of the basal layers in the days listed before.
Results: We notice a re-epitelization average of 1.5 mm each day, with a complete cicatrisation at day 25, 82% (17 eyes) apparition of prebasal cells at day 4, and in 96% (20 eyes) we saw normal basal cells at day 12, 82% had an organized basal layer at day 18, and we observe the apparition of desquamation cells at day 12, we didn’t see Bowman’s layer and epithelial nerves. In the basal cell count we observed a similar number of basal cells at 2 months compare than control.
Conclusions: We took more parameters than other studies for epithelial re-grow, and we found similar results than those reported in similar literature.
