ABSTRACT
Purpose: To determine epidemiological and clinical characteristics and degree of ocular and extra ocular affectation of patients with retinoblastoma.
Material and methods: Descriptive, observational, retrospective and cross-sectional study. We reviewed 41 patients with retinoblastoma from January 2002 to December 2006.
Results: The average age of diagnosis was 22 months. 51.2% were female and 48.75% male, 68% had unilateral presentation, and 31% bilateral, classifying two of these last like trilateral retinoblastoma (4.8% of the total). The more frequent clinical manifestation was leukocoria, followed by strabismus and glaucoma. Of the 41 patients, 54 affected eyes were classified according to Reese Ellsworth in stage I and II (3.7%), stage III (5.5%), stage IV (14.8%) and 72.2% in stage V. According to the St. Jude’s Stage, the distribution was: 12.19% in degree I, 63.4% in degree II, 7.3% in degree III and 17% in IV.
Conclusions: Diagnosis in advanced stages continues to be one of the main factors for bad prognosis.
