ABSTRACT
Objectives: To describe the post-surgical results and incidence of complications in patients submitted to frontalis suspension with Silastic.
Methods: It is a retrospective and observational study of patients operated from January 2003 to January 2006. Etiology of ptosis, preoperative and one year postoperative palpebral aperture and the incidence of complications were recorded. The postoperative results one year after surgery were measured by changes in pre and postoperative palpebral aperture.
Results: 15 frontalis suspension with Silastic surgeries where included. The mean follow-up was 23 months. The mean preoperative palpebral aperture of 5 ± 2 mm was significantly less than a postoperative palpebral aperture of de 7 ± 1.9 mm. The mean preoperative value of elevator function of 3 ± 3.2 mm was exactly the same than the mean value of the postoperative elevator function. The incidence of complications was 20%, corresponding to one granuloma and 2 cases of extrusion of Silastic.
Conclusions: The frontalis suspension with Silastic is an effective surgical technique in the treatment of blepharoptosis with stable results during the first year after surgery.
