ABSTRACT
Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy and security in the use of heavy silicone as tamponade in vitreoretinal surgery.
Methods: Patients assisting to the Insituto de Oftalmologia with a complicated retinal detachment involving the inferior portion of the retina and requiring internal tamponade with silicon oil were recruited for this non-randomized, prospective study, in a period from January 2004 to December 2005. We included patients with retinal detachment secondary to proliferative vitreoretinopathy, inferior or posterior breaks or trauma, with or without traction components. Follow ups examinations were at day 1, 4 weeks, 12 weeks, 24 weeks and up to 36 weeks.
Results: A total of 48 patients were treated (10 females and 28 males) with a mean age of 39 years (range 11 to 81). Retinal detachment secondary to trauma accounted for 15 cases, diabetic tractional detachment for 5 cases, retinal detachment with significant proliferative vitreoretinopathy 28 cases. Early recurrence of retinal detachment in 14 cases. Complications included emulsification in 24%, which was not significant, ocular hipothony in 18%, posterior capsular opacification in 37.5%, two patients required cataract surgery during the follow up, one patient needed 3 kinds of topical antihypertensive drops to control eye pressure and one patient had persistent eye inflammation until heavy silicon was removed.
Conclusions: The use of heavy silicon is a useful alternative as a tamponade in the surgery treatment of inferior retinal detachment, its use is safe and the potential complications are similar to those with the use of conventional silicon.
