ABSTRACT
The objective of this study was to determine the frequency and the antimicrobial susceptibility of the pathogenic microorganisms recovered from Urinary Tract Infection (UTI), from inpatients and outpatients from a local clinic in Lima, Peru. There were 479 urine samples with a respective urine culture and for the antimicrobial susceptibility analysis was used the Kirby-Bauer method. The principal microorganisms recovered were
Escherichia coli (70%), No Hemolytic Streptococci (9.5%),
Proteus mirabilis (6.7%),
Staphylococcus aureus (4.8%) and coagulase negative staphylococci (4.8%). Ampicillin-sulbactam and amikacine shows higher activity (80-100%) against enteric bacilli gramnegative and grampositive cocci. Nalidixic acid and nitrofurantoine show variable activity (32.8-55.4%) against
E. coli, ceftriaxone shows high activity (90%) against this bacterium. It is determined the major presence of
E. coli in UTI just as the better antimicrobian activity of ampiciline-sulbactam and amikacine for all bacteria recovery.
