ABSTRACT
Objective: To assess whether the administration of topical ceftazidime decreases hearing after treatment in patients with non-cholesteatomatous chronic otitis media.
Material and method: An observational, longitudinal, ambispective and analytical study was conducted at the otorhinolaryngology, and head neck surgical ward at the highly specialized medical unit of the La Raza General
Hospital National Medical Center in Mexico City from January
1998 to September 2002. The study group was comprised by patients diagnosed with non-cholesteatomatous chronic otitis media that were administered ototopic treatment with ceftazidime drops. Age, gender, disease evolution and co-morbidity were controlled. A hearing test was done before and 30 days after treatment using a Madzen Minimate
602 brand audiometer. A statistical analysis was done using SPSS statistical software version 10.0.
Results: 50 patients were studied. No statistically significant differences were found in the degree of hearing after the administration of the drug: p › 0.48, CI: 0.96-1.13 and RR = 1.1.
Conclusions: The ototopical administration of ceftazidime does not produce a decrease in hearing after treatment.
