ABSTRACT
Purpose: To evaluate the utility and final outcome of silicone tube nasolacrimal duct closed intubation as the treatment for adult patients with acquired upper lacrimal drainage.
Methods: We retrospectively studied the clinical files of adult patients with acquired upper lacrimal drainage obstruction who were surgically managed with silicone tube nasolacrimal duct closed intubation between January 1999 and January 2004.
Results: Two hundred and thirty eight lacrimal drainage systems underwent dacryointubation. The silicone tubes remained in situ for 2 to 11 months. Improvement of symptoms was noted in 70.48 % of the patients, and 62.39 % of them had complete resolution of epiphora.
Conclusion: Silicone tube nasolacrimal duct closed intubation is an adequate surgical procedure for the treatment of epiphora in adult patients with acquired upper lacrimal drainage obstruction.
