ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine the incidence, for a mexican pediatric population, of posterior capsule opacification after cataract surgery with intraocular foldable lenses.
Material and method: Retrospective study of clinical charts from patients undergoing cataract surgery between 2000 and 2005, including those surgeries with intact capsular bag implantation of an intraocular foldable lens and a postoperative followup of more than 3 months.
Results: From 77 cataract surgeries, 62.34% was with intraocular foldable lens. 33 eyes of 26 patients with a median age of 8.27 years were select, all of them with an hydrophobic acrylic intraocular lens. 15 (45.45%) had significant posterior capsule opacification, with a median appearance of 5 postoperative months. High frequency and relation of the capsular opacity with traumatic, metabolic and secondary to radiotherapy cataracts (67%) was observed. 16 (48.48%) cases reported a final visual acuity equal or better than 20/40.
Conclusion: Intraocular foldable lenses have a high incidence of posterior capsular opacification after cataract surgery. Association with pathologies other than cataract may affect the postoperative course of capsular transparency
