ABSTRACT
Purpose: In the current paper we describe the clinical, histopathological and ultra-structural findings of anomalous corneal cicatrization. Methods: We reviewed the archives of the Ophthalmic Pathology Service from 1957 to 2004 with diagnosis of aberrant cicatrization. The clinical data of the cases were obtained from the charts. All the cases had formalin fixed paraffin embedded tissue. From all the samples 5 microns thickness sections were obtained and stained with hematoxylin-eosin and Masson’s trichrome.
Results: We recruited 4 cases, two male and two female, with a mean age of 12 years. The most frequent clinical symptoms were pain and photophobia. The histopathological diagnosis in all cases was corneal keloid.
Discussion: The cornea may develop different types of anomalous cicatrization processes like keloid and hypertrophic scar, which can share some clinical and histopathological similarities. The mechanism that origin both keloid and hypertrophic scars is not well known yet, but there are few theories that will be commented in the discussion.
