ABSTRACT
Purpose: To evaluate if the optical coherence tomography measurement of macular thickness is useful in the early detection of glaucomatous damage.
Methods: We used optical coherence tomography to measure macular thickness in glaucoma suspects and compared these results between the group of patients who had normal frequency doubling technology and those who had not.
Results: Of 22 eyes, 18 had normal frequency doubling technology results (Group1), and 4 had abnormal results (Group 2). The mean age was 47.89 years for the first group and 45.25 years for the second, p = 0.777. No statistically significant difference of intraocular pressure or cup/disc ratio was found between both groups. We did not find statically significant difference of macular thickness measured with optical coherence tomography in any area of the retinal map between the two
groups.
Conclusions: Macular thickness measured by optical coherence tomography didn’t show a statically significant difference between both groups. We conclude that macular optical coherence tomography analysis isn’t useful for early detection of glaucomatous damage.
