Meniscal transplantation. Case report with eight months follow-up

ABSTRACT
It is demonstrated that the complete meniscus resection produces early and irreversible articular harm. Lateral meniscustomy makes this process go faster than the medial one since, in the lateral compartment, the meniscus supports almost all the compression weight. Meniscus surgery has experienced a radical change during the last twenty-five years. Nowadays, it tries to be conservative, either through meniscus reconstruction, provided that it is feasible, or substituting it by meniscus implantation or allografting transplantation. Without any doubt, the type of implantation most commonly employed and scientifically supported is the meniscus transplantation with allografting. This is considered both from the experimental and the clinical point of view. In order to obtain good results through the graftings, it is decisive to choose the proper patients. They have to fulfill some conditions: age, his activity level, as well as stability, alignment and the contrail harm present at the knee. This article presents the case of a male patient being 34 years old and presenting pain in the knee, with a background of medial meniscustomy and rupture in the anterior cross-ligament. This last ligament was reconstructed and it was also performed a meniscus transplantation. The results of this transplantation after an eight-month follow-up period are reported in this article.
