ABSTRACT
Introduction. Knee osteoarthrosis constitutes one of the most frequent pathological situations in daily orthopedics practice. This disease is responsible for restraining life style and quality in a great part of the population. Material and methods. A descriptive and transversal study was carried out on patients having been diagnosed and surgically treated due to knee osteoarthrosis through arthroscopy during the period going from January to July 2003. Type of study. Case series. Results. A total of 53 patients were included in the study during the period that it was performed. The female sex was dominant in the 66% of the patients. The age group presenting the highest incidence was the group from 41 to 50 years old (26.4%). The symptom most commonly found was pain in the 98.1% of the cases. The most frequent affection grade, according to Outerbridge’s classification, was III. The arthroscopic treatment used with the highest frequency was joint washing-out associated with debriding in the 67.9% of the cases. The factors associated with the bad prognostic were related to the presence of Outerbridge’s III or IV affection grade (56.6%), bi or tri-compartment participation (28.3%), long symptom evolution and pain when resting (18.8%). There were found excellent results in the 77.3% of the cases. Conclusion. Arthroscopic surgery when treating knee osteoarthrosis constitutes a therapeutical option which offers promising and hopeful results; however, its directions must be precise in order to ensure success in the treatment.
