Follicular adenoma in intrathoracic thyroid. A case report and literature review

ABSTRACT

A 67-year-old female patient, with a history of cerebral ischemic infarction, 50% carotid artery blockage, and a neck tumor resection at the age of 3, reported having dyspnea to medium and great efforts for a year, orthopnea and paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea, fatigue and a 10 kilo weight increase. Physical examination revealed a collateral venous network in the neck extending to the chest with a sternal protrusion. Chest X-rays showed a mediastinal lesion and a chest tomography showed an antero-superior mediastinal tumor over 101 mm x 74.69 mm in size. The tumor was resected by sternotomy. The pathological results showed the tumor to be an intrathoracic thyroid follicular adenoma.
