ABSTRACT
Medicinal herbs have pharmacokinetic, pharmacodynamic effects and potential interactions with other drugs. It is indispensable to consider the use of this type of traditional medicine in the perioperatorive period, since, adverse effects can be produced.
Objective: To know the number of presurgical patients who consume herbal medicines themselves, to identify the frequency in the use and the disease and / or symptom associated.
Material and method: In programmed patients for an elective anesthetic-surgical procedure, a questionnaire was applied.
Results: During three months, 210 questionnaires were applied. Forty seven patients (22.3 %) consumed herbal medicines, forty one women (87.2%) and six men (12.7%), with a mean age of 42 ± 15 and 54 ± 9 years respectively. A total of 98 types of herbal medicines were used. The most commonly used include aloe, arnica, chamomile and nopal. With an overdose, the arnica, chamomile and absinthe, are toxic herbs. Valerian and «St. John’s» may have interactions during anesthesia. In the 50% there were relation between herbal medicine and symptom.
Conclusions: The use of herbal medicines is common in the presurgical population. Due to the possible interactions with anesthetic agents, it is important to know its use, and suspend two weeks before surgery. The patients use or herbal medicines for an elective anesthetic-surgical procedure is more than 20%.
