ABSTRACT
Introduction: Margins are a factor for local recurrence, obtaining adequate margins larger than 1 cm is important, occasionally the transoperatory information suggests that margins are adequate, but in the final report it is demonstrated that margins are close or positive and patients need reintervention. Objective: To demonstrate that an X ray of the surgical specimen is useful in evaluating margins and is associated to the final pathological report. Material and methods: 20 patients with invasive carcinoma, between 1 and 3 cm, where treated with a cuadrantectomy, the X ray of the surgical specimen and the transoperatory pathological report are compared to the final pathological report. Results: 3 cases of close margin where detected in the X ray, only one of them was detected in the pathological transoperatory report. The final pathological report confirmed that the 3 cases had close margins. Three additional extension of surgical margins where done in the same surgery procedure and a reoperation at another time was not necessary. Conclusion: An X ray of the surgical specimen of cuadrantectomies is useful in detecting adequate and close tumor margins, and is an additional source of information to decide if an extension of surgical original margins is necessary.REFERENCES
