ABSTRACT
Introduction: Some authors has been reported a elevated rate of morbidity and mortality during the intrahospital transportation of patients assisted with mechanical ventilation (AMV).
Objective: To determine if oxygen saturation and clinical data are enough to evaluate the intrahospital transport risk of ICU patients assisted with pressure ventilator.
Design: Descriptive study.
Setting: Respiratory Therapy Department of a third level care hospital, Mexico City.
Patients: Fifty nine AMV patients (32 women, 27 men, range 18-60 yrs) were included.
Interventions: Mechanical ventilation support.
Measurements and main results: Oxygen saturation was measured with a portable pulse-oxymeter. The mean values obtained at 15’, 30’ and at the end of service (ICU arrival) were 93%, 93% and 97%. No patient had complications during transport.
Conclusion: The safe transport of artificially ventilated ICU patients is not related with the utilized equipment in our hospital, but the correct patient evaluation and the appropriate use of ventilator.
