ABSTRACT
Introduction: Preeclampsia is a disease characterized by endothelial damage, capillary leakage, microangiopathy, hemorreologic and hemodynamic alterations, and often kidney damage.
Objective: To report the experience with the use of early peritoneal dialysis in preclampsia patients with acute renal failure (ARF).
Setting: Preeclampsia-eclampsia Research Unit of a maternal-infantil institute, Toluca, State of Mexico; Mexico.
Design: Retrospective study.
Patients and methods: We reviewed the files of preeclampsia patients and IRA admitted to obstetric intensive care unit (OICU).
Results: During a 24 month-period 587 patients were admitted to the OICU; 423 developed preeclampsia and 16 of these ARF (six required peritoneal dialysis). ARF was associated with HELLP syndrome in 9 cases, stillbirth in nine and to hepatic rupture in one. Renal function was recovered ad integrum, and ICU stay was 11.8 days.
Conclusions: The early use of peritoneal dialysis in preeclampsia patients with ARF is related with a good recovery.
