ABSTRACT
Hepatic fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNA) was done in 100 dogs. The puncture was done with no anesthesia using a 21 calibre needle and a 20 ml syringe. Smears were done and stained using the Papanicolaou technique. In order to establish an histological correlation, hepatic tissue fragments were collected and processed with a paraffin inclusion method and stained with H.E. Under cytological observation, cases were eliminated as inadequate and 93 cases remained. The latter were cytologically and histologically studied and divided into 2 groups. There were 65 cases in Group 1, in which a cytohistological correlation was obtained. Sixtythree per cent presented no alterations, 23% with hepatic lipidosis; 10.7% corresponded to inflammatory alterations and 3.3% with hematic pigment. In Group 2 (28 cases), with no cytohistological correlation, 23 cases presented no cytological alterations (82.1%); and histologically, 19 corresponded to an hepatic lipidosis, 1 of them with a fibrosis, 1 case with necrosis, 1 with hematic pigment and one with metastasic cells from the squamous carcinoma type. Cytologically from 28 cases, 4 cases had hepatic lipidosis, and histologically they corresponded to 2 cases with inflammatory alterations, 2 with hematic pigment and 2 with no alterations. Using Baye's formula, a specificity rate of 89% and sensitivity of 55% were obtained. This corroborated that the hepatic fine needle aspiration biopsy is a highly specific method, but it is not a very sensitive method to select, when no clinical or laboratory data are available to guide to an hepatic alteration. It also proves to be a reliable, harmless and useful tool in the diagnosis of hepatic pathology.
