ABSTRACT
Blood composition was determined in 34 female, adult alpacas (Lama pacos). The animals had been reintroduced from the north Chilean highlands to the south lowlands in Valdivia, Chile. The haematological values obtained were: erythrocytes (7.1-13.0 x 106/µl), haematocrit (20-32%), haemoglobin (9.2-15.2 g/dl), MCV (18-34 fl), MCH (8-16%), MCHC (37-57 g/dl), leucocytes (4.5-19.0 x 103/µl), basophils (0-3%), eosinophils (0-36%), neutrophils (32-71%), band cells (0-6%), lymphocytes (8-45%) and monocytes (0-7%). Erythrocytes were small, flat and elliptical; neutrophil contained pink cytoplasmatic granules, and eosinophils contained round orange granules that incompletely filled the cytoplasm. Biochemical values were: urea (4.0-9.2 mmol/l), total proteins (54-72 g/l), albumin (31-45 g/l), globulin (15-36 g/l), fibrinogen (1-5 g/l); aspartate transferase (AST) (81-187 U/l), g glutamil transferase (gGT) (5-41 U/l) and alkaline phosphatase (SAP) (3.1-167 U/l). Results were analysed and compared with those obtained under different conditions, providing information about knowledge concerning this species.REFERENCES
