ABSTRACT
In spite of the fact that antihistaminics are, more or less, routinely used in veterinary medicine, little has been written about this pharmacological group, and hence, studies carried out to validate their clinical efficacy are scarce. In spite of their later arrival to veterinary medicine, more literature can be found about H2 receptors antagonists than about H1 ones. Little is also found on the use of histamine release inhibitors. Dificulties involved in the assessment of the "well-being" induced by antihistaminics in veterinary medicine may explain the limited number of research articles on this particular subject. However, it is clear that the antagonic nature of antihistaminics can be helpful to assist other drugs in the treatment of a wide variety of diseases. These reasons prompted this study to review the specialised literature in order to offer clinicians and researchers an overview of the available clinical data. Hoping to stimulate research on the field of pharmacokinetics of antihistaminics in veterinary medicine, particularly about antiH1 drugs, and stressing that extrapolation of pharmacological data is not possible, the corresponding data available in humans is presented. Similarly, few well-documented doses of antihistaminics are available in veterinary medicine, and therefore, both reference to drug-doses in human and empirical doses in the veterinary clinical practice are presented. When regarded as important to veterinary medicine and experimental work, reference to clinical uses of antihistaminics in human beings is also presented.
