ABSTRACT
Animal production in the backyard is a traditional activity system in Mexico with the aim of solving some of the difficult economic situation of the peasants. Chicken is the most common species in this system in the state of Yucatan; and these animals are fed with by-products which otherwise would be wasted. In previous studies it was found that respiratory disease is the most important one found in these animals. In this study an infectious bronchitis virus isolate was obtained from broiler type chicken introduced to backyards in the Yucatecan community of Sinanche. This virus was called SIN6. The antigenic characterization of this isolate was obtained with the haemagglutination inhibition test using haemagglutinating antigen produced from 11 reference serotypes (Massachusetts 41, Arkansas, Connecticut, Holte, CVL/9, 793/B, Dutch 274, Dutch 1466, Australian "T", Italian 624 and Chilean 368), and antisera against them and against the Iowa 97. No antigen was obtained from the Iowa 97 despite repeated attempts. Isolate SIN6 had a low antigenic relationship with all the reference serotypes; this indicates that it is probably a new serotype, but further genetic sequence studies are needed to confirm this finding. Serotype CVL/9 showed a strong antigenic relationship with all the serotypes, and this makes it a good candidate for the production of a universal vaccine against the infectious bronchitis virus.
