ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to assess the awareness of the International Asthma Management Guide (GINA for its initials in Spanish) in specialist doctors and general practitioners from the City of Puebla (Mexico). A 30 reactive instrument was applied to a sample of 1,474 physicians. The results show that 23% know the GINA, 65.4% may identify asthma as a chronic disease and 49% identify the physiopathology characterized by inflammation. Likewise, 53.9% recognized risk factors; in regards with treatment, only 44.3% prefer the inhaled means of administration. With respect to the use of the diagnostic instruments, 34.3% are aware of spirometry and 44.2% know about bronchodilators, basic instruments for a timely diagnosis. Based on the above, we are able to conclude that the management of this disease shows serious deficiencies, which generates the need to train general practitioners, since they are the first contact of the patient for the control of their disease and are responsible at a great extend of an opportune and efficient intervention to prevent the progression of the disease to more severe stages that deteriorate the quality of life of the patient with frequent hospitalizations that generate high costs for the health sector.
