Acute leukemia and lung injury. Case report

ABSTRACT

Objective. To report the case of one patient with acute myeloblastic leukemia associated to acute lung injury.
Design. A case report.
Setting. An ICU of a university-affiliated hospital.
Patient. A previously healthy 20-years-old man was admitted to the ICU due to osseus pain, systemic bleeding and acute respiratory failure.
Interventions. Citoreduction with chemotherapy, leuko-pheresis and vital support.
Measurements and main results. Chest radiographs showed pulmonary infiltrates and Murray Score was 2.75 points. White cell count showed 327,000 leukocytes/mm3 with hypereosinophilia, and the cariotype a reciprocal translocation of chromosomes 8 and 16 (46XY,t (8;16) (p11;p13)). The patient was discharged from the hospital in remission of leukemia after 26 days.
Conclusion. Patients with acute leukemia may have unusal complications as pulmonary leukostasis.
