ABSTRACT
Objective. To compare the results of cardiopulmonary resucitation (CPR) between two departments with different technical resources.Design. Case series.
Setting. An intensive care unit (ICU) and an internal medicine department (IMD) in a teaching hospital of Mexico City.
Patients. Thirteen ICU patients (mean age, 67 years) and seven IMD patients (mean age, 62 years).
Interventions. Electrocardiographic telemetry (ET) and pulse oxymetry in ICU patients (group A); IMD patients (group B) were not monitored.
Measurements and principal results. Survival was 38.4% in group A and 57.1% in group B. The mean age of survivors in both groups was 66 years and for non survivors 58 years (p ‹ 0.001). Neurological disability was 16% in group A and 50% in group B. RCP was established at 12 seconds in group A and 80 seconds in group B.
Conclusions. a) ET is a useful tool in the opportune detection of CRA. b) Age is not related to the CRA patient. c) The CPR success is not only the survival of the patient, but the neurological integrity as well.
