ABSTRACT
Objective: To describe the epidemiology of nosocomial infections in a multidisciplinary ICU.
Design: Prospective cohort study.
Setting: ICU of a private general hospital in Mexico City.
Patients: A total of 238 patients were enrolled in this study during a twelve-month period.
Measurements and main results: The nosocomially infected patient rate was 26.1%. Lower respiratory tract infections were most frequent (31.9%) followed by urinary tract infections (17.4%), wound infections (15.9%) and primary bloodstream infections (12.3%). Gram-positive cocci (30%) and gram-negative bacilli were the most common organisms isolated. An increase of the use of mechanical ventilation, invasive interventions and nutritional support in infected patients were observed (p ‹ 0.05).
Conclusions: The nosocomially infected patient rate is high in our ICU. It increases the cost of medical care.
