ABSTRACT
Objective. To present the experience over HELLP syndrome in pregnant patients admitted to a polyvalent ICU.
Design. Retrospective study.
Setting. An ICU of a tertiary care hospital of Mexico City.
Interventions. None.
Measurements and main results. Hemolysis, erythrocytic fragmentation, liver enzymes and bilirrubines were performed. Of the 388 patients admitted to de ICU during the study period, eleven fulfilled the criteria for the diagnosis of HELLP syndrome. Patients age was 29 ± 5.6 years; the maternal mortality rate was 27.2% and the complications associated to HELLP syndrome were acute renal failure (45.4%) liver hematoma (18.1%) and brain hemorrhage (18.1%).
Conclusion. HELLP syndrome is a serious complication observed in patients with preeclampsia-eclampsia.
