ABSTRACT
Objective. To know the nutritional status of the complicated heart-surgery patient.
Design. Retrospective and observational study.
Setting. Cardiac Surgery ICU (CSICU) of a reference hospital of Monterrey, Mexico.
Patients. Patients undergoing to complicated heart surgery admitted to a CSICU (n = 59, age 57.5 ± 13.3 years) during a 22 month period.
Interventions. Review of the medical record for the ICU course.
Measurements and main results. Assessment of nutritional status (using clinical history, antropometric measurements, biochemical paramenters and caloric requirements). Malnutrition was observed in 51 patients: light (n = 17), mild (n = 30) and severe (n = 4); eight had a normal nutritional status. Morbidity was 86.4% and the mortality rate was 44%).
Conclusion. Malnutrition in the complicated heart-surgery patient is associated with elevated morbidity and mortality.
