The informed consent is a useful document in the medical and surgical practice nowadays, since this is a document that is based on current legislations and states the patient´s agreement to undergo a specific surgery. This document must be written in such away the patient understands the risk of the procedure, the expected complications, and the rate of success and failure expected for the procedure. This is a medical and legal document, which is a contract between the patient and his surgeon. In the case of face allograft, due to the fact it is an innovative procedure, with no rate of success or failure data published, it is important that the patient understands all the short and long term risks; which is why informed consent must included the immunosuppressive treatment and future risks to be valid.
