Quality of life before and one year after the ICU admission

ABSTRACT
Objective: To evaluate the quality of life before and one year after the ICU admission.
Design: Prospective comparison of the quality of life.
Setting: Medical-surgical ICU in an University Hospital.
Patients: First admission adult critically ill patiens that survived to the first 24 hours after the ICU admission.
Interventions: Quality of life measures were colected before and one year after the ICU admission.
Measurements and main results: 21 patients were excluded of 98 originally included. Forty eight of the 77 remaining patients survived one year after and resolved the second survey. None of the evaluated areas (basic physiological activity, normal diurnal activities an emotional state) either the total score were different between the first and last surveys.
Conclusion: The quality of life is not different before and after one year of the ICU admission in this group of patients.
