Morbidity and mortality rate associated with operative treatment of abdominal aneurysms in an intensive care unit

ABSTRACT

Objective. To study the mortality/morbidty associated with the surgical treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA).
Design. A retrospective study.
Setting. An ICU of a tertiary care hospital of Mexico City.
Patients. We reviewed the records of 33 AAA patients admitted to the ICU in the postoperative period, from July 1997 to June 1998.
Interventions. None.
Measurements and main results. Sixteen patients developed 1.1 ± 0.76 organ dysfunctions, the survivors (29) had 1.8 ± 0.9 points of the Marshall’s Organ Dysfunction Score (MaODS); in the other hand 4 ± 0.8 dysfunctions (8.7 ± 2.1 points of MaODS) were identified in the nonsurvivors (four); p ‹ 0.05.
Conclusion. The morbidity associated with the surgical treatment of AAA is high in this preliminary report in our country.
