ABSTRACT
The allergic reaction in anesthesia happens more frequently that one can imagine. The principal problem is that, in most cases, the patient is unaware of such antecedents. The purpose of this article is to give the definition of anaphylaxis, reveal the immunopathologic mechanisms involved in allergic reactions most faced by anesthesiologists and how to treat and manage a patient with suspected anaphylaxis reaction. The perfect understanding of the cellular physiopathology, of the consequences of the activation of the cellular membranes, mastocytes and basophiles, and of the pharmacology of the mediators like histamine, protease and lipid is of great importance. The knowledge and fast identification of the agents that most frequently cause an anaphylactic reaction, like muscle relaxants, latex, antibiotics, hypnotics, etc., is the key to prevention and treatment of anaphylactic reactions in programmed anesthesia and emergencies.
