ABSTRACT

In 2007, the Central Blood Bank at the Centro Médico Nacional Siglo XXI celebrated its 45th anniversary. In the last years the blood bank has undergone many important changes in the way we operate. Today we are developing many novel approaches such as blood fractioning, apheresis, specialized production, automatization, new technologies, support for transplantation procedures and regenerative medicine.
Quality assessment procedures are critical issues of our daily workload. The blood bank also addresses immunohematology needs for the whole country. We are in charge of the hemophilia home-treatment program using purified virus free concentrates, industrialized hemostatics and recombinant products. In addition we have a system of ambulatory transfusions for patients.
Our highly qualified human resources have been involved in several research projects. Our researchers have publications in high impact scientific journals and have won national awards. Our blood bank has made critical contributions to the field in Mexico; their involvement and participation in the creation of the Mexican Association of Transfusional Medicine (AMMT, AC) was crucial. The blood bank also runs a Hemophilia´s Center recognized by The World Federation of Hemophilia. On a daily basis we are developing full expertise in the area of transfusional medicine.
