Nutritional valuation of a composter maked with poultry-by products for feeding broilers

ABSTRACT
The objective of this study was to show the feasibility of producing a poultry-byproduct composter, and to evaluate its potential use in broiler diets. A pathogen-free product containing 32.1% protein, approximately 1,913 kcal of true metabolizable energy (TME), good amino acid, macro- and micromineral contents was obtained by adding water to a mixture of poultry manure, straw and corpses of broilers in the right proportion to promote aerobic fermentation. The composter was stored in wooden containers, under a temperature of 72° with a 55% moisture, 5-10% 0
2 and a pH of 6.3 - 6.5. A mycotoxin analysis was carried out resulting in 5 µ/kg aflatoxin B1, T-2 toxin, ochratoxin A and zearalenone. The biogenic amine content was: phenethylamine= 19.8 ppm, putrescine= 2.06 ppm, cadaverine= 16.0 ppm, tyramine= 37.3 ppm and histamine= 0 ppm. In a biologic assay the innocuos composter and its feed value was evaluated when included in broiler diets at levels of: 0%, 2%, 4% and 8%. Data obtained after 7 weeks did not show significant statistical difference (P‹0.01) regarding performance, although there was a 7% lower weight gain average in treatments using composter than in the control one, keeping in mind than broilers have a high nutritional requirement. It is concluded that this product can be an alternative protein source for animal production, in addition to its already demonstrated important fertilizing value, even though the possibility of anaerobic germ development (e.g.,
Clostridium sp) in poorly-managed composter could limit its use in susceptible species.
