The question about how many dog breeds existed during the prehispanic age in Mexico is still unresolved, because the information is rather confusing and sometimes even contradictory. In this paper the author analyzes the existent information with an interdisciplinary vision, using simultaneously, facts, proceedings to historical sources, linguistics, archeozoology and iconography. The conclusion is that during the prehispanic age, three dog breeds existed: A dog with a height of 50 to 60 cm and fur in the body with different names; the hairless dog or Xoloitzcuintli and a dwarf dog with fur called Talchichi.
