ABSTRACT
With the objective to interrupt the life cycle of
Taenia solium, the effect of gamma irradiation (Co 60) on the metacestode was studied. Larvae obtained from infected pigs were irradiated with doses of 0.5, 0.7, and 4 to 11 kGy. Doses of 6.5 kGy and higher, killed the larvae; this was confirmed by the absence of evagination. Immunosuppressed golden hamsters were fed with metacestodes irradiated with 7 kGy and
Taenia did not develop in their intestines, verified 10 and 30 days after inoculation. Doses of 0.5 and 0.7 kGy did not affect the capacity to evaginate, but when these larvae were fed to immunosuppressed hamsters, no worms were found in their intestines 30 days post-infection (p.¡.). Ten hamsters were fed 5 larvae irradiated with 0.5 kGy. Ten days after the infection, a short
Taenia was recovered in one of them. However, after 30 days none were found. A group of 20 hamsters were each fed 5 larvae irradiated with 0.7 kGy. After 10 days, pin sized scolices had developed in some of their intestines. After 30 days, no worms were found. In hamsters inoculated with non-irradiated metacestodes,
Taeniae of different lengths were found 10 and 30 days p.¡. in their intestines. Individual differences in the Susceptibility to the infection were observed in hamsters. It was also found that metacestodes from different pigs did not show equal capacity to infect hamsters. These findings are discussed and it is concluded that based on the results of hamsters inoculation, an irradiation dose of 0.7 kGy suppresses the infectivity of metacestodes of
T. solium.
