ABSTRACT
Introduction: There are several studies about ophthalmologic manifestations caused by the extracranial carotid disease. This disease has been studied accurately in regard to cerebral vascular events, nevertheless there are few studies related to the carotid stenosis degree and to the presence of ophthalmologic signs and symptoms. Objective: Our research intends to determine the relationship between the carotid disease and the ophthalmologic manifestations.
Material and method: A study was performed in 100 patients older than 65 years with high risk in peripheral disease through carotid US Doppler duplex.
Results: Out of the 100 patients with some risk in carotid disease, there were 57 patients with some stenosis degree. The patients were divided into three groups: those who presented stenosis from 50 to 99%, another group with ranks from 16-49% and finally those with stenosis of 15% or less. All patients underwent ophthalmologic exploration. Group A was formed by 19 patients, among them seven presented some type of ophthalmologic manifestation. Within group B, out of the 13 patients, six showed ophthalmological signs and symptoms related with carotid disease. As to the 25 patients of group C, only two had some ophthalmologic manifestation.
Conclusion: Our research showed that patients with stenosis from 20 to 99% presented 40.6% of ophthalmologic manifestations, which in time may produce blindness or visual damage through the years.
