ABSTRACT
Background. Parkinson’s disease is associated with cognitive disorders. It has been said that a subcortical dementia can be found in up to 30% of the pacients. In order to investigate these symptoms, SPECT has demonstrated hypoperfusion in the hypocamus, putamen and frontal areas, which has been associated with this disorder.Objetives. Performing SPECT to these patients, we will determinate the level of perfusion to the basal ganglia and the hypocampus and its correlation with standard neuropsychological tests (Barcelona and Mini mental state exam).
Methods. This is a transversal and open study, developed at the Hospital Central Militar, six weeks long, incluiding patiens that have been followed up at the Neurology clinic of the Hospital.
Results. Thirteen patients finished the study. The Barcelona test showed that 100% of them had memory problems. Eleven patiens (84%) had hypocampus defects, one patient (7%) hemispheric hypoperfusion and three (23%) with lobar hypoperfusion (frontoparietal).
Conclusions. SPECT demonstrated brain hypoperfusion at the hypocampus, frontal and temporal lobes, all of which had been probed to be affected by the Barcelona test. This makes SPECT usefull in the early stages of Parkinson’s disease to evaluate for subcortical dementia because of its sensibility to show perfusion defects in memory specific areas.
