ABSTRACT
Distress makes reference to an emotional, social and/or spiritual event, which appears when dealing with an excessively stressful experience, such as cancer. Its can be caused by many reasons such as: financial reasons (economic, employment, labour or housekeeping difficulties), family concerns (relationship with couple, child care), physical problems (pain, nausea, fatigue, sleeping disorders, physical disability), emotional reactions (concern, sadness, anxiety, panic, depression), existential and spiritual doubts (loss of faith). Both the patient and family are incapable of dealing with the disease and its treatments, leading them into a strong fatigue, which affects their quality of life. Psychooncology, as a subspeciality, offers a way to provide answers to the relating factors when dealing with cancer and distress. The objective is for the patient and his family to actively deal with the disease process, providing positive feedback to the mood of the patient and counteracting the defenceless feeling they may experience. The perception of having control, can help as an emotional containment, since its possible to deal with the situations, as long as they count with the support of their family, society and the attending professionals.
