ABSTRACT
Migraine sufferers present a high risk for substance dependence; however, we do not know accurately the prevalence of smoking among patients with migraine. The objective of this review was to establish the prevalence of cigarette smoking in migraineurs. A systematic review was carried out in Ebsco, Embase, Lilacs, Ovid, Proquest, and PubMed databases. Nineteen articles were found, but just eleven of them met inclusion criteria. The mean lifetime prevalence of cigarette smoking was 65.1%, the mean current prevalence was 47.8%, and the current prevalence of nicotine dependence was 32.8%. It concludes that cigarette smoking is rather high in patients with migraine; however it is not quite clear the possible association between migraine and cigarette smoking.
