ABSTRACT
Introduction: Any lesion that elevates the gastrointestinal tract mucous membrane surface and protrudes to the lumen is defined as a polyp. Those from the gastrointestinal tract and associated syndromes form a complex group of alterations with a wide difference in their clinical and pathological presentation.
Objectives: To investigate the incidence and presentation of polypoid lesions in patients from the Hospital San José-Tec de Monterrey in a 15 years period.
Material and method: 258 patients with polyps diagnosis were studied. To complement these lesions diagnosis imaging methods were investigated.
Results: Different values for anatomic area, age group were obtained, resulting among others, 10 oesophageal polyps and 49 gastric ones. Among the pathological finds simple polyps in the esophagus stand out, hyperplasic in the stomach, adenomatous in the duodenum, there were cases of youth polyposis and family kind in the rectum.
Analysis: The benign esophagus lesions constitute close to 20% of all neoplasias.
Conclusions: The endoscopy is considered the gold standard, lesions less than 1 cm can be evaluated by this method. The endoscopic visualization of these lesions can be followed up by a polypectomy as treatment.
