A proper evaluation of cardiac and respiratory functions of the dog are of paramount importance when attempting surgical-anaesthetic procedures. This review gathers basic information required to prevent functional emergencies during anaesthesia and also provides basic therapeutic guidelines when such problems arise. Emphasis is given in routine clinical procedures, such as electrocardiography, X rays and clinical examination of the patient. Careless both evaluation and monitoring of these functions in the dog could be life-threatening; hence, a word of advise is given to increase the awareness of the veterinary clinician.
