ABSTRACT
Giant cell tumors of the tendon sheath (xantomas) are a benign and proliferative process of monoclonal origin of the synovial membrane. The most frequent site of appearance is the hand, usually as a painless growth of soft tissues. Image studies have poor sensitivity and specificity as a diagnostic tool. Treatment is by complete excision and variable recurrence rates have been reported. We performed a review of the recent literature and analyzed the clinical data of 41 patients with 42 tumors which were surgically treated between 1970 and 2003 finding no recurrence.
