ABSTRACT
Objectives: To determine the prevalence of geriatric syndromes in hospitalized elderly over 80 years compared with the reported of geriatric literature.
Patients and methods: In a retrospective, descriptive, transversal study we analyzed the different geriatric syndromes in elderly over 80 years hospitalized in the ABC Medical Center between January and December of 2004, through the specific validate scales and habitual criteria for each one.
Results: Five hundred subjects were included, mean age 85.47 ± 4.4, 56.4% woman (n=282). We analyzed 23 geriatric syndromes, the most frequent was polypharmacy with a prevalence of 68.2%, and the least frequent abuse and mistreatment, with 0.6%. Compared with the literature, there were present more frequently the following geriatric syndromes: depression, urinary incontinence, visual and hearing impairment, electrolytic disorders, and polypharmacy. With lower prevalence: falls, fragility, immobility, constipation, malnutrition, obesity, sleep disorders, podiatric illnesses, caregiver’s burden, abuse and mistreatment. The geriatric syndromes delirium, pressure ulcers, gait disorders, cognitive impairment, fecal incontinence, and dental illnesses were in similar ranges to the literature reported.
Conclusion: The geriatric syndromes characteristics can be explainned, in part, by the socioeconomic level an the advanced age of the studied population. The prevalence knowledge of these entities in our environment let us know our population characteristics and to plain future necessities.
