A three year old male English Mastiff of approximately 60 kg of weight was taken to the veterinaria for an examination. It showed progressive paralysis in the hindlimbs, fecal and urinary incontinence and haematuria. The general physical examination of the dog showed normal limits. Nevertheless, the neurological examination revealed paresis, ataxia with uneven hindlimbs and hidlimbs hyperreflexia. Clinical, signs suggested an injury in the spinal cord located in the lumbar segment. Due to progressive suffering and inefficient treatment, the patient was eutanized and a compIete necropsy was practiced. No significant injuries in organs or tissues were found. A medullar compression was not present. The histologic examination of the lumbar spine revealed symmetrical degeneration of axons and myelin in the lateral and ventromedial white substance of the spinal cord at the L5 level, and asymmetrical degeneration of axons and myelin in the lateral and ventromedial white substance extended to the right side at the L6 level. Pathological changes were similar to the ones present in old German Shepherd dogs with degenerative myelopathy.
