ABSTRACT
Objective: To demonstrate that laparoscopic myomectomy at the ABC Medical Center is a safe procedure associated with few complications and few conversion to laparotomy, along with less surgical time and hospitalization.
Methods: This is a transversal study of myomectomies performed in ABC Medical Center from January of 1996 to December of 2005 to detect the number of procedures done and weather they are abdominal or laparoscopic. Surgical reports of laparoscopic myomectomies were inspected to identify the number of procedures converted to laparotomy, duration of surgery and hospitalization.
Results: 373 myomectomies were done: 321 (86%) were abdominal, 5 (1%) assisted by laparoscopy and 47 (13%) were laparoscopic. Five (11%) laparoscopic myomectomies were converted to laparotomy. Duration of surgery and hospitalization time was 122 minutes and 34.1 hours for patients in the laparoscopic group versus 159 minutes and 70.6 hours for the abdominal group.
Conclusions: Laparoscopic myomectomy performed in the ABC Medical Center is a safe procedure with few complications and a low conversion rate to laparotomy as well as less duration of surgery and hospitalization.
