ABSTRACT
Objective: To describe the clinical characteristics of patients with allergic rhinitis (AR).
Method: A prospective study was conducted at the Instituto Nacional de Pediatría. Ninety children aged 4 and 5 years were included. Sixty had AR and 30 had no allergic disease (control group). Standard prick tests to ascertain the allergic aetiology and blood test for IgE were performed to all patients. Physical examination was carried out looking for atopic stigmata.
Results: AR is most common among men; 75% of patients had atopic history; asthma was the most commonly associated allergic disease. The most frequent atopic stigmata were: Dennie-Morgan lines, allergic shiners, conjunctivitis, facial tics, nasal salute, keratosis pilares and looking-pale complexion. These were statistically significant when compared with the control group. IgE serum levels were increased in 85% of patients with AR.
Conclusion: Atopic stigmata are related to the AR.
