ABSTRACT
Introduction: Asthma is a multifactorial disease. Environmental, passive or second-hand smoke is a pollutant inside the house that increases the severity of asthma.
Objective: To ascertain the prevalence of passive smoking in asthmatic children aged 2-15 years receiving ambulatory care at the alergology and pneumology services of the Hospital para el Niño Poblano.
Methods: A cross-sectional survey looking for environmental tobacco smoking was conducted in parents of asthmatic children aged 2-15 years. Those exposed to other type of smoke and with comorbidity were excluded; also, those who refused answering the questionnaire were not included.
Results: The survey comprised 228 interviewees; it was conducted from September to November 2006. Among the children of the interviewed parents, 25 (75%) suffered from allergic asthma and 8 (25%) had non-allergic asthma. Regarding passive smoking, the prevalence was 33 (14.4%); According to the gender distribution there were 12 women (36%) and 21 men (64%). Seven (21%) were preschoolers, 15 (45%) schoolers and 11 (34%) were adolescents. Smoking relatives were as follows: mother 1 (3%); father 15 (45%); both parents 2 (6%) other relatives 15 (45%). Regarding the amount of tobacco smoked per day, 30 (90%) smoked 10 or less cigarettes, 1 (3%) smoked 11-20 cigarettes and 2 (6%) more than 20 cigarettes. 26 (78%) smoked all week; 4 (12%) four days, 2 (6%) 3 days and 1 (3%) 2 days. Regarding the severity of asthma, 24 (60%) had intermittent asthma and 9 (27%) had mild persistent asthma.
Conclusions: The prevalence of passive smoking in this study was 14.4%.
