ABSTRACT
Introduction and objectives: Surgical management of mediastinal pathology, both diagnostic and therapeutic, should be done by a qualified thoracic surgeon. The purpose of this paper is to review the surgical procedures performed by thoracic surgeons in our service during 2006.
Materials and methods: Descriptive, retrospective, transversal and observational study. Chart review of the procedures performed during 2006 in patients with mediastinal pathology at the Department of Thoracic Surgery, National Institute of Respiratory Diseases Ismael Cosío Villegas. Gender, age, pathology, procedure, complications and mortality related to the procedure were registered and evaluated.
Results: Seventy one patients 1 to 88 years old, mean 50 years; 43 women. Twenty nine pericardial drainages, 24 mediastinoscopies-mediastinotomies, 9 drainages of the mediastinum for mediastinitis and 9 resecctions of mediastinal tumors were done. There were 8 complications: 3 seromas, 1 soft tissue infection, 2 transoperatory bleedings and 2 loculated empyemas; 7 (77%) of the 9 patients with mediastinitis died, the two survivors were reoperated due to loculated empyemas. There were no other deaths.
Conclusions: Mediastinal pathology is varied in a concentration hospital; the procedures for diagnosis and treatment executed by qualifed thoracic surgeons are performed with satisfactory mortality when patients arrive in a timely condition.
