Nosocomial infections in the Instituto Nacional de Pediatría (INP) 2004-2005

ABSTRACT
Introduction. Nosocomial infections an important public health problem. At least 2 million patients have one infection per year in the United States with a cost of 4.5 billon dollares. It is important to asses the local characteristics of nosocomial infections in order to implement preventive and control measures and policies.
Objective. To determine the incidence of nosocomial infections, microbiology and mortality among hospitalized children at the Instituto Nacional de Pediatría (National Institute of Pediatrics).
Material and methods. A transversal study was conducted from January 2004 to December 2005 among patients with nosocomial infections. Specific nosocomial rates were analized.
Results. In 2004, the global nosocomial infection rate was 4.7 per 100 discharges; the highest rate was in the Neonatology Unit. In 2005, the rate was 4.5.
Discussion. The predominant nosocomial infections were, bacteriemia, pneumonia, urinary tract infections. In the Intensive Care Unit nosocomial infections were the 5th and 10th for the years 2004 and 2005 respectively.
