Spontaneous pneumomediastine. A rare complication of asthma

ABSTRACT

Spontaneous pneumomediastinum is a rare and infrequent asthma complication in children. We present the case of a six years old girl with a history of asthma without pharmacologic nor medical control. During a mild asthmatic crisis, she developed a pneumomediastinum, detected by radiology and subcutaneous emphysema, with great facial deformity. Despite the moderate degree of this event she was treated conservatively according to the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA), and had a favorable clinical and radiological otucome. The pathogenic mechanism is discussed and the literature on the subject is reviewed.
